15. Friday Wee Hours - Pizza Problems

A pox on all of you, Emma thought watching the sordid confessional from her chair.

For a few seconds nobody moved, each seemingly caught in his or her own rung of hell. Then the sound of Blake's cell phone ringing jarred everyone out of their private nightmares.

"Fifth and Townsend?" he said.

Silence.

"Sonoma?"

More silence.

"We need him available for questioning."

Blake nodded, listening for a few more seconds to whatever the person on the other end of the call had to say. Then he added, "Got it. Any progress identifying the pizzas?"

After waiting for an answer, he hung up.

While Blake was on the phone, Fairchild Foley had motioned Miles, Chris and Ted out into the hall. His expression was grim.

Heads are going to roll, Emma thought to herself. Then she shuddered at the reference. One already had.

The four men had just reached the exit when Blake waved them back into the room.

"Good news and bad news," he announced. "Good news. Trujillo was sighted at a highway rest stop heading north towards Sonoma. He's on the run. Bad news. We haven't caught him yet."

Despite what Blake called "bad news," Emma sensed a collective sigh of relief ripple around the room.

"While I’m fairly confident we've identified our man," the detective continued, "I'm asking that all of you stay put. For your own protection. Trujillo is still at large. He might have another accomplice somewhere. So, you're all free to wander the top two floors of the building; but I request that no one leave the building yet. Understand?"

He waved to one of the policemen to let the four male partners out into the hall. Then Piers caught the detective's eye.

"About my client," he said pointing to Emma. "She doesn't look well. I'm perfectly prepared to let her stay in the building," he added, "but it's after midnight. I think she needs some rest."

Emma cast her son-in-law a grateful glance. She knew she was running on empty. Any fumes of adrenaline left over from the murder had long since evaporated.

Blake's response was a sharp shake of his head. He pulled up a chair next to Emma's. Then, to her surprise he said, "I'm sorry, Ms. Corsi. There are a few more questions I have to ask you."

On hearing this, everyone who was left in the room stopped what they were doing to listen.

"Can't we do this in private?" Piers asked. "How about Ms. Corsi's office?"

But Emma was too tired to move.

Casting another grateful smile at her son-in-law, she replied, "It's fine Piers. Everyone is welcome to hear whatever I have to say."

Piers started to object, then decided against it. He pulled up a chair.

Blake sat down across from her and lowered his voice. "M'am," he began, "it's about the pizzas. We still haven't been able to locate the source. Forensics identified that pizza recipe on your desktop and…" he hesitated. "Well, we just need to know what it was doing there. After all, this is a law firm and you're a paralegal, right? Not a cook.
